I am pleased to address the students and other stake-holders of Karnatak Science College Dharwad, which has a glorious history. The Karnatak Science College has highly trained faculty who are engaged in research as well as teaching, good laboratories, well-maintained museums and richly endowed libraries. The teachers of this institution provide students the liberty to think and express themselves. The governing body of the college believes that education is an effective medium of social transformation. Education plays a key role in the overall development of the society. Looking at the bright and successful careers of thousands of our students, the staff members and administrators of the college feel a sense of achievement, as these successful students engage in activities which ultimately benefit the society at large. It gives me immense pride to acknowledge the contribution of all the members of the teaching and administrative (non-teaching) staff in making the various endeavors undertaken by the college successful. The students of this esteemed institution benefit not only from the theoretical and experimental curriculum, but also from efforts to develop their personality, and the encouragement to involve in extra-curricular activities. There is emphasis on holistic development. The list of alumni of our college includes Shri. P. B. Gajendradkar, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Wrangler Dr. D. C. Pavate, former Governor of Punjab and Padma Bhushan awardee, Late Prof. Dr. M. I. Savadatti, former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Mangalore University, Padmashri Nandan Nilekani, Former CEO of Infosys Bengaluru, Prof. Dr. A. M. Pathan, former VC of Karnatak University, Dharwad and the ex-VC of the Central University of Karnataka located at Gulbarga, Dr. Raman Deshpande, a leading surgeon in cancer research at Mumbai, Dr. R. Koliwad, former scientist at NASA in USA, Major General Michigan of Indian Army, Dr. Ravi Surpur IAS, Shri Nanjundaswamy IPS, Shri Jagadeesh Dodamani IFS and Lt. Col. R. S. Desai, among many others.

The role of education is definitely not limited to giving and grasping knowledge, skill and good academic abilities. The true goal of education implies an all-round development of a person, both in mind and spirit. The ultimate goal of education is discovery of the meaning of life, both for oneself and for all mankind. The quest of education is knowledge, humanity, culture, wisdom and sharpness, but it should be noted that knowledge is not given but earned, and character is not granted, but cultivated. Hard work, dedication and perseverance are the most important traits in a person that leads him (or her) to success. The future belongs to the students of today, who have to prepare themselves for an active participation in the modern world. This participation demands that students become well informed, and ultimately grow as responsible men and women, shouldering the great responsibility of being the educated citizens of India.
